Background
Establishing Michigan as a leader in tackling the climate crisis, the MI Healthy Climate Plan lays out a broad vision for fulfilling Governor Whitmer’s commitment to achieving 100% economy-wide carbon neutrality in Michigan by midcentury.
The Department of Environment, Great Lakes, & Energy Office of Climate and Energy (OCE) is partnering with the Michigan Community Service Commission to leverage state and federal investments to launch the MI Healthy Climate Corps an innovative approach to advancing the goals of the MI Healthy Climate Plan.
Starting in early 2024, the MI Healthy Climate Corps will field a cohort of 30 AmeriCorps members who will provide critical support to communities tackling climate change. MI Healthy Climate Corps members will receive significant training and career development support to step into Michigan’s climate leadership pool.
In the coming years, the MI Healthy Climate Corps will expand to offer additional community support and service opportunities throughout the state.

Approach
Empower and mobilize all of Michigan to meet the goals of the MI Healthy Climate Plan

Through Corps members’ service, provide meaningful capacity support for aligned climate projects in governments and nonprofit organizations across the state in service of MI Healthy Climate Plan goals.

Establish Corps members as ambassadors of federal and state resources available to support partner organizations’ climate efforts.

Offer fellowship building, training, and professional experience to develop Corps members’ skills and relationships for the long haul.

The first program cohort will start by March 2024.
In the coming months the MI Healthy Climate Corps will be engaging with community partners, state agencies, and others to identify needs, and opportunities for this program to catalyze action and setting up a process to request support.
The program will also set up an process for interested candidates to find an opportunity that meets their leadership goals.
Finally, the program will be building training, support, and technical assistance program elements and are interested in knowing who may have resources, content, or other partnership ideas to make this as impactful as possible.
